This brand-new Forever stamp honors women’s soccer in the United States. From youth leagues to the elite championship-winning U.S. Women’s National Team, millions of girls and women across the country take part in this fast-paced, highly competitive sport.
The stamp artwork captures a female soccer player executing a side volley mid-match. A subtle grainy rendering lends the design a timeless texture, evoking not just a single all-star athlete or a single era, but the full legacy of women’s soccer as a whole.
For decades, women’s athletic programs were largely overlooked at universities, severely underfunded, and denied the same recognition afforded to men’s sports. In 1972, Congress amended the Federal Education Act by adding Title IX, which prohibits gender discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.
By 1985, female soccer players were finally able to compete internationally. That same year, the U.S. Women’s National Team played its first official match in Italy. In 1991, the U.S. Women’s National Team competed in the inaugural FIFA Women’s World Cup held in China and claimed the championship title.
Despite these milestones, women’s soccer remained relatively obscure. It did not truly step onto the global stage and build a loyal fanbase until women’s soccer debuted as an official Olympic sport at the 1996 Summer Games, where the United States defeated China to win the gold medal.
Since then, dozens of elite female athletes have donned the U.S. Women’s National Team jersey and dominated competitions across the globe. In 2019, the U.S. team made history as the only squad to win four FIFA Women’s World Cup titles.
Antonio Alcalá served as the art director for this stamp, which features original illustrations created by Noah MacMillan (1988–2022).
